Blogger’s Guide to Hashtags

Blogger’s Guide to Hashtags

Hashtagging is not going anywhere any time soon – when used correctly, a hashtag strategy will help you get your content seen by a larger audience and give your SEO a boost as well establish your brand and get in on trending topics and conversations. While Instagram and Twitter are platforms where a well-executed hashtag strategy will serve you well, you can also use hashtags in your blog content to set a more fun, casual tone. #YouGotThis

What are the different types of hashtags?

There are three main categories that most hashtags can be sorted into:

  • Content Hashtags: These hashtags can be thought of as keyword tags. For example, if you’re writing a blog post about hashtags you might use #socialmediamarketing when posting about it. Content hashtags are general categories or phrases that directly relate to the post’s content.
  • Branded Hashtags: This is a hashtag that you create to refer to your blog brand in particular. For example, this blog’s branded hashtag is #AfrofemmeBlogger. As far as possible, try to make sure that this hashtag is not already being used for posts completely unrelated to your blog or your brand.
  • Campaign Hashtags: Like branded hashtags these are completely new and created for a specific campaign you’re running. Sometimes, participating in or engaging with other more well-known brands and using their campaign hashtags can get you seen by a much larger audience.
  • Trending Hashtags: These hashtags are great way to stay relevant and participate in current conversations online. Platforms like Twitter conveniently tell you what the current trending hashtags are if you look in your sidebar once you’re logged in.
  • Event Hashtags: Whenever attending an in-person or online event, always make sure you find out what the event hashtag will be. These hashtags will be unique to the event and will most likely have a higher engagement rate.

Twitter hashtag strategy for bloggers

One of the most important things to remember when it comes to best practices for using hashtags on Twitter is to exercise restraint. You have a limited amount of characters available when tweeting so it’s generally recommended that you use only one to two hashtags per tweet.

Instagram hashtag strategy for bloggers

You have a lot more freedom when using hashtags as part of your Instagram strategy. Instagram allows users to use up to 30 hashtags per post. Using the full amount of hashtags available to you for every post can come across as a bit much so I always advise brands to try to stick to around 15-20 quality hashtags for every post scheduled or posted to Instagram. It should be noted that there are quite a few Instagram-specific hashtags – for example, #bookstagram is a great one for Afrofemme book bloggers to consider.

How to find hashtags for your blog content

If you’re looking for more hashtags to use when posting your blog content, a great place to start is by checking out what other bloggers in your niche are during. By looking at their social media posts you should be able to find a few hashtags that will be relevant to your own content strategy. You can also use useful online tools like RiteTag and Hashtagify.me or hashtag suggestion tools built into platforms like Later.com to expand your hashtag strategy.

With more than a decade of experience in marketing, remote working and blog writing, I'm passionate about empowering Afrofemme bloggers with the tools needed to create the online blogging business of their dreams. When I'm not working on a campaign as the marketing director at PICHA stock, an afrocentric visual content provider, you can find me enjoying a good book (the paper kind please), tackling DIY projects at our farmhouse in South Africa or stumbling through a yoga practise.
